There is so much you can do with tile patterns, it seems a pity to waste the opportunity and just go for a plain straight set with your tile or stone. Even a simple band or a deco liner raises your tile work in a shower, tub surround, or on a vanity backsplash, up from the ordinary. In this picture, 12" x 12" travertine was cut down to 6" x 6" and set on a brick pattern. Many tile and stones can be bought in brick sizes to eliminate the time in cutting down your tile. Brick mosaics as small as 1/2" x 1" in stone or glass are available for complete walls, or can be used for striping. Other sizes of tile easily found for a brick pattern are 3" x 6", 6" x 12", and 12" x 18".

Then again, some tile work is so complex and colorful that some people might see it as being over the top. It all depends on you - whether you want a subtle, soothing background for a relaxing soak in the tub, or an invigorating, lively visual feast during your morning shower to help you wake up and face the day, or something else in between. Your options are endless.
